September 2019
Have I already mentioned that I love road trips? Well, now you know. So, as I planned our summer holiday I knew, if we were going to stay in Europe, it had to be a road trip. I just love the flexibility a car gives you and I think you see and experience a lot more.
Our ultimate destination was Sardinia, but we also wanted to see beautiful places as we go. Since, we have never been to Großglockner, Austria’s highest mountain, we decided to drive the Hochalpenstraße. Driving up this winding road was fun (even though our car brakes didn’t enjoy it that much I guess).
We then continued our trip to South Tirol where we stayed in a wonderful hotel, which offered the most amazing breakfast we had on this whole trip. The following two days were quite exhausting as we had one medium hike and one quite challenging hike and a via ferrata planned. The first day we went to the Lago di Sorapis which is a wonderful lake with milky-turquoise water. The next way we went to the Tre Cime and did the De Luca Innerhofer via ferrata. It’s a via ferrata where you must go inside tunnels that were build during the first world war. Let’s say it was an experience and the view on top of the Tre Cime was breath-taking and absolutely worth the effort.
After our wonderful days in South Tyrol we went to Cinque Terre and stayed there for two nights. And we loved it. The food, the lovely villages, it was all perfect. Also, it was wonderful for a photo enthusiast like me.
But it was time for us to finally get to our ultimate destination. So, we took the over-night car ferry (which was already an adventure on its own) and woke up in Sardinia the next day. To be completely honest, we don’t really understand the hype about Sardinia as there are many other beautiful islands with better value for money in the Mediterranean. Unfortunately, we also weren’t lucky with the weather as the mistral wind was quite strong. However, after a couple of days we could eventually enjoy crystal clear water in the La Maddalena archipelago, which was absolutely beautiful. We also did a boat trip, even though we were quite sceptical about it and were positively surprised. So, that’s definitely a must do for a trip to La Maddalena.
After two very exciting and wonderful weeks, we eventually had to go home but promised to go hiking again in South Tyrol as it was definitely a highlight of our roadtrip.
